Safety Instructions and Fire Hazards

Read all instructions before using the dryer. These safety rules are there to help prevent fire, explosion, electric shock, scalding, injury, and property damage.

Key fire and explosion warnings

• Do not store or use gasoline, flammable vapors, or flammable liquids near this dryer or any other appliance.
• If you smell gas:
• Do not try to light any appliance.
• Do not touch any electrical switch.
• Do not use any phone in your building.
• Clear everyone out of the room, building, or area.
• Call your gas supplier from a neighbor’s phone and follow their instructions.
• If you cannot reach the gas supplier, call the fire department.
• Do not dry items that have been cleaned, washed, soaked, or spotted with gasoline, dry cleaning solvents, vegetable oil, cooking oil, or other flammable or explosive substances. These materials can give off vapors that may ignite or explode.
• Do not dry foam rubber or similarly textured rubber-like materials with heat.
• Do not put oily or greasy clothing, candles, plastic, paper, or other items that may burn or melt on top of the dryer during operation.
• Do not place items exposed to cooking oils in the dryer. Items contaminated with cooking oils may react and catch fire.
• If a load includes items contaminated with cooking oils, the final part of the cycle runs without heat as a cool down period. Avoid stopping the dryer before the cycle ends unless you can remove all items immediately and spread them out so heat can dissipate.

Dryer installation and venting rules

• Install the dryer according to the manufacturer’s instructions and local codes.
• Installation must be performed by a qualified installer.
• Clothes dryer installation must be done by a qualified installer, and the appliance must be installed and electrically grounded by qualified service personnel.
• Before use, the appliance must be properly installed as described in this manual.
• Do not install a booster fan in the exhaust duct.
• Do not install the dryer with flexible plastic venting materials.
• If flexible metal foil-type duct is used, it must be a specific type identified by the appliance manufacturer as suitable for clothes dryers.
• Use only rigid, semi-rigid, or flexible metal 4-inch diameter duct inside the dryer cabinet or for exhausting to the outside.
• Use of plastic or other combustible ductwork may cause a fire.
• Punctured ductwork may cause a fire if it collapses or becomes restricted.
• Use rigid, semi-rigid, or flexible metal ducting between the dryer and the wall; any non-rigid metal transition duct must be UL-listed.
• The exhaust duct must be 4 inches (10.2 cm) in diameter and free of obstructions.
• Keep the exhaust duct as short as possible and clean any old ducts before installing a new dryer.
• The dryer exhaust system must vent to the outside of the dwelling.
• Gas dryers must be exhausted to the outside.
• If the dryer is not vented outdoors, lint and moisture can enter the laundry area and create a health and fire hazard.
• The end cap should have hinged dampers to prevent backdraft when the dryer is not in use.
• Do not use sheet metal screws or other fasteners that extend into the duct and can catch lint. Secure all joints with duct tape.
• Keep the area around the exhaust opening and nearby surfaces free of lint, dust, and dirt.
• Do not install near another heat source such as a stove, oven, or heater.

Electrical safety and grounding

• Connect the dryer to a properly rated, protected, and sized power circuit to avoid electrical overload.
• Do not use an extension cord or adapter.
• Do not modify or extend the power cord.
• Do not cut or remove the third grounding prong from the power cord.
• The appliance must be plugged into a properly grounded outlet installed according to local codes and ordinances.
• Improper grounding can create an electric shock hazard and/or fire hazard.
• Have a qualified electrician or service personnel check the wall outlet and circuit if you are unsure whether the appliance is properly grounded.
• Disconnect the power cord, house fuse, or circuit breaker before installing or servicing the appliance.
• Turning the controls to OFF does not disconnect power.
• Never unplug the appliance by pulling on the cord. Grip the plug and pull straight out.
• Do not grasp the power cord or touch the controls with wet hands.
• Repair or replace any power cord that is frayed, cracked, or abraded.
• When moving or installing the appliance, do not pinch, crush, or damage the power cord.
• The appliance must not be supplied through an external switching device, such as a timer, or connected to a circuit that is regularly switched on and off by a utility.

Safe use of the dryer

• Never operate the appliance if it is damaged, malfunctioning, partially disassembled, or missing/broken parts, including a damaged cord or plug.
• If you detect a strange sound, a chemical smell, a burning smell, or smoke, unplug the appliance immediately and contact an LG Electronics customer information center.
• If the appliance has been submerged, contact an LG Electronics customer information center before using it again.
• Use this appliance only for its intended purpose.
• Do not tamper with controls.
• Do not reach into the appliance if the drum is moving.
• Do not abuse, sit on, or stand on the door.
• Do not put any part of your body, such as hands or feet, or metal objects under the appliance.
• Do not let your hand get pinched when opening or closing the dryer door.
• Always check the inside of the appliance for foreign objects before use.
• Do not allow children to play on, in, or with the appliance. Close supervision is necessary when children are nearby.
• Do not let children or pets climb inside the dryer drum.
• Do not put living animals inside the appliance.
• This appliance is not intended for use by people with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless supervised or instructed by someone responsible for their safety.
• Do not use replacement parts that were not recommended by the manufacturer.

Installation and handling precautions

• Adhere to recommended safety procedures, including long-sleeved gloves and safety glasses.
• Moving or installing the appliance requires two or more people.
• Call qualified service personnel for installation and service if the appliance is moved to a different location.
• This appliance is not designed for maritime use or for mobile installations such as RVs, trailers, or aircraft.
• Do not install the appliance in humid spaces.
• Place the appliance at least 18 inches above the floor for a garage installation.
• Keep packing materials out of the reach of children. Cartons, plastic bags, and other packing materials can be dangerous and may create a suffocation hazard.
• Destroy the carton, plastic bag, and other packing materials after unpacking.

Maintenance and servicing safety

• All repairs and servicing must be performed by qualified service personnel unless this manual specifically recommends otherwise.
• Do not repair, replace, disassemble, or service the appliance yourself.
• Remove dust or foreign matter from the power plug pins.
• Disconnect the appliance from the power supply before cleaning or any user maintenance.
• Unplug the appliance before cleaning to avoid electric shock.
• The interior of the appliance and exhaust duct should be cleaned periodically by qualified service personnel.
• Remove the door before removing the appliance from service or discarding it, to help prevent children or small animals from being trapped inside.
• Certain internal parts are intentionally not grounded and may present a shock risk during servicing. Service personnel should not contact the control board while the appliance is energized.

Steam-cycle caution

• Do not open the dryer door during a steam cycle.
• Do not touch the steam nozzle in the drum during or after a steam cycle.
• On models with a steam feeder tank, do not fill it with hot water above 86 °F (30 °C), gasoline, dry cleaning solvents, or other flammable or explosive substances.

Grounding reminder

The dryer must be grounded. Grounding helps reduce the risk of electric shock if a malfunction or breakdown occurs. If you are not sure the appliance is grounded correctly, have a qualified electrician or service personnel check it.

Special note for gas appliances

Gas appliances can cause minor exposure to benzene, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, and soot from incomplete combustion. Proper adjustment and venting to the outdoors help reduce exposure.
