Read This First: Safety Messages and Symbols

Before using the washer, read all instructions and keep them for later reference.

Safety alert symbol and message words

This manual and the appliance use a safety alert symbol to warn you about hazards.

• The safety alert symbol means there is a potential hazard that can kill or injure you or others.
• Safety messages with WARNING mean you may be killed or seriously injured if instructions are not followed.
• Safety messages with CAUTION mean you may be injured or the product may be damaged if instructions are not followed.

Each safety message explains: - what the hazard is, - how to reduce the chance of injury, and - what may happen if the instructions are not followed.

Basic safety rule

To reduce the risk of explosion, fire, death, electric shock, scalding, or injury, follow all warnings and precautions in the manual.

Installation precautions

• Use the appliance only after it has been properly installed as described in the manual.
• Follow all installation instructions to reduce the risk of severe injury or death.
• Installation and grounding must be done by qualified service personnel in accordance with local codes.
• Refer to the installation instructions for detailed grounding procedures.
• If the washer is moved to a new location, have it checked and reinstalled by qualified service personnel.
• Moving or installing the appliance requires two or more people.
• Use long-sleeved gloves and safety glasses as part of recommended safety procedures.
• Do not install the appliance in humid spaces.
• Store and install the appliance where it will not be exposed to freezing temperatures or outdoor weather.
• This appliance is not designed for maritime use or for mobile installations such as RVs, trailers, or aircraft.
• Keep packing materials away from children. Packaging can be dangerous and may create a suffocation risk.
• After unpacking, destroy the carton, plastic bag, and other packing materials so children cannot use them for play.
• Install the appliance on a firm and level floor.
• Do not let the power cord get pinched, crushed, or damaged during installation or moving.
• Connect the washer to a properly rated, protected, and sized power circuit to avoid electrical overload.
• Position the appliance near an electrical power supply.
• Disconnect the power cord, house fuse, or circuit breaker before installing or servicing the appliance.
• The cord has a 3-prong grounding plug and must be plugged into a standard 3-prong grounding outlet.
• Do not cut or remove the third grounding prong.
• Use new hoses when connecting the washer to the water supply. Do not reuse old hoses.

When using the washer

• Use this appliance only for its intended purpose.
• Do not operate the washer if it is damaged, malfunctioning, partially disassembled, or missing or broken parts, including a damaged cord or plug.
• If the product has been submerged, sitting in standing water, or waterlogged, do not touch it and contact an LG Electronics Customer Information Center before using it again.
• If you notice a strange sound, a chemical smell, a burning smell, or smoke, unplug the washer immediately and contact an LG Electronics Customer Information Center.
• If the hot-water system has not been used for two weeks or more, hydrogen gas may be present. Hydrogen gas is explosive. Before using the appliance, turn on all hot water faucets and let water run from each for several minutes. Do not smoke or use an open flame during this time.
• Do not reach into the washer while the tub or drum, agitator, or other interior parts are moving. Press Start/Pause and wait for the tub or drum to stop completely before loading, unloading, or adding items.
• This appliance is not intended for use by people, including children, with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, or without experience and knowledge, unless they are supervised or instructed by a person responsible for their safety.
• Do not allow children or pets to play on, in, or with the appliance. Watch them closely whenever the washer is used near them.
• Keep laundry products out of children’s reach.
• Read and follow all warnings on laundry product labels.
• Never unplug the washer by pulling on the power cord. Grip the plug firmly and pull straight out from the outlet.
• Do not use an extension cord or adapter.
• Do not touch the appliance controls or grasp the power cord with wet hands.
• Do not modify or extend the power cord.
• If the power cord is damaged, it must be replaced only by the manufacturer, its service agent, or another qualified person.
• Keep oily or greasy clothing, candles, and other flammable materials off the top of the appliance.
• Keep the area underneath and around the washer free of combustible materials such as lint, paper, and rags, and free of gasoline, chemicals, and other flammable vapors and liquids.
• Do not store or use gasoline or other flammable vapors and liquids near this or any other appliance.
• Do not mix chlorine bleach with ammonia or acids such as vinegar. Follow package directions when using laundry products. Incorrect use can produce poisonous gas and may cause serious injury or death.
• Do not use harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, or solvents on the washer because they can damage the finish.
• Do not wash items that were previously cleaned in, washed in, soaked in, or spotted with gasoline, dry-cleaning solvents, vegetable or cooking oil, or other flammable or explosive substances.
• Do not add gasoline, dry-cleaning solvents, or other flammable or explosive substances to the wash water.
• If there is a gas leak, such as propane or LP gas, do not operate this or any other appliance. Open a window or door immediately to ventilate the area.
• Do not tamper with controls.
• Secure the drain hose in place to avoid flooding.
• Do not abuse, sit on, or stand on the door.
• Check the inside of the appliance for foreign objects before use.
• Do not let water, bleach, or other liquids sit in the drum for extended periods because this can corrode the drum or cause mildew or odors.
• Do not dry unwashed items in the appliance.
• Do not use replacement parts that have not been recommended by the manufacturer.

Maintenance and service

• Disconnect the appliance from the power supply before cleaning or doing any user maintenance.
• Turning the controls to OFF does not disconnect power.
• Remove dust or foreign matter from the power plug pins.
• Do not repair or replace any part of the appliance yourself unless the manual specifically recommends it.
• All repairs and servicing must be done by qualified service personnel, using authorized factory parts.
• Remove the door before removing the appliance from service or discarding it so children or small animals cannot become trapped inside.
• Make sure the dispenser drawer or lid is closed when it is not being filled with laundry products.

Grounding reminder

Proper grounding helps reduce the risk of electric shock in the event of a malfunction or breakdown. The washer has a cord with an equipment-grounding conductor and a grounding plug. The plug must be inserted into an appropriate outlet installed and grounded according to local codes and ordinances. If you are unsure whether the appliance is properly grounded, check with a qualified electrician or service personnel. Do not modify the plug. If it does not fit the outlet, have a proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician.

Extra caution for certain loads and situations

• Turn off the water faucets and unplug the appliance if it will be left unused for an extended period, such as during vacations.
• Always follow the garment manufacturer’s fabric care instructions.
• Use fabric softeners or static-control products only as recommended by the manufacturer.
• Do not combine laundry products for use in one load unless the label says to do so.
• Do not touch draining water because it may be hot.
• If the drain hose and water inlet hose are frozen in winter, defrost them before using the appliance.
• Do not store or spill liquid detergents, cleaners, or bleaches on the appliance because they may cause corrosion, discoloration, or surface damage.
• Clothing or articles that are waterproof or water-resistant must be washed only in the Waterproof, Bedding, Bulky/Large, or Jumbo Wash cycle. Examples include water-resistant clothing, mattress covers, outdoor clothes, and plastic mats. If not, abnormal vibration may cause personal injury or damage to the washer, clothes, walls, floor, and surrounding objects.
